ABC finally handed out a renewal to one of its most established and durable hits, The Goldbergs, and its spinoff series Schooled. The Goldberg’s will return for season seven, and Schooled for season two.

The Sony TV-produced duo took longer than usual, being left out of the range of ABC renewals announced Friday due to the complexities of the renewal between Sony TV and ABC. A Goldberg’s renewal was contingent on Schooled being renewed in the process, and the unofficial word is that Schooled will return for a 13-episode run, same as season one.

Launched in 2013, the pop-culture fueled The Goldberg’s has been a key asset on ABC’s Wednesday night comedy lineup at 8p.m. Based off the life of Goldberg’s creator Adam F. Goldberg, Sean Giambrone plays a young version of Adam as a teen obsessed with movies, pop-culture and everything 80’s related. Wendy McClendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, Hayley Orrantia, Troy Gentile and George Segal round of the cast.

Schooled stars former Goldberg’s co-star AJ Michalka into the 1990’s as a teacher at her former high school William Penn Academy, the high school in the Goldberg’s universe. Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer and Bryan Cullen also star, portraying their characters originated from The Goldberg’s.

For its latest April 10 episode, The Goldberg’s drew 4.6 million viewers and Schooled averaged 4.8 million for its debut this spring, staying consistent in the ratings thereafter. Both series join recently renewed comedies Bless This Mess, Fresh Off The Boat, Single Parentsand drama series The Rookie on ABC’s list of renewed series.
