The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are weeks away and it’s time to narrow down who I believe SHOULD WIN and WILL WIN at this years Emmys. Let’s take a look at Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

- Tony Hale – Veep
- Stephen Root – Barry
- Tony Shalhoub – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
- Henry Winkler – Barry
Who Should Win – Tony Hale, Veep
If Veep wins any Emmys for is lukewarm final season, Tony Hale deserves accolades for the his role as Gary Walsh. Despite already having two Emmys for this role (2013, 2015), I’d be pleased to see him walk away with one more. Hale’s submission “Veep” is the series finale of HBO’s political satire, we see where everyone in the immediate orbit of Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) ends up once she finals makes it to the Oval Office. Gary however, takes the fall for Selina’s corruption that led her to the White House, leaving Gary to take the fall during an FBI investigation. Throughout the series, with all his eccentricities and insecurities, Gary has been the character to root for because you can’t help to love him. Even though you never quite understand his devout loyalty to Selina, you love Gary for his innocent and warm-hearted demeanor, and we got to see Hale’s full-on display of this for one last time in the Veep series finale.
Who Will Win- Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Predicting a winner in the category was one of the most difficult to choose throughout the entire Emmy prediction cycle. You have last years winner Henry Winkler, who could easily win for the second season of Barry if voters just name check him on the ballot. Tony Shalhoub once again put on a great performance as the title character’s father Abe Weissman on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Adam Arkin (who surprisingly doesn’t have an Emmy) is a living legend and delivered a solid performance for The Kominsky Method. Lets not forget to mention first time Emmy nominees Stephen Root and Anthony Carrigan, who excelled in the second season of Barry – exceeding the performance of Winkler. All these men, including Hale who’s mentioned above, have a strong case of winning this category this year and frankly, I would be fine with seeing any of these men win.
I do need to choose a winner, and I think this is going to Maisel co-star Tony Shalhoub. Shalboub is no stranger to winning Emmys, taking home prizes in 2003, 2005 and 2006 for his USA comedy Monk. Shalhoub is also the current SAG winner for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, beating both Winkler and Arkin. In my mind, this constitutes Shalhoub the frontrunner to win this year.
